Hoshizaki vs Manitowoc vs Scotsman vs Ice-O-Matic
These four brands cover most U.S. foodservice ice. This is not a ranking and not a reliability study. We do not have a lab and we do not invent reviews. Compare ice shape, form factor, and the numbers on the current sheet.
What each brand is known for (from their own catalogs)

Model numbers change when refrigerants change (Hoshizaki J → K on several 2025–2026 cabinets; R-134a / R-404A → R290 on compact units). Always match the suffix on the data plate.
Ice you cannot swap across brands
Crescent, gourmet, sphere, and top-hat are not the same cube. A Hoshizaki crescent will not look like a Scotsman gourmet in a rocks glass. Half-dice from Manitowoc and Ice-O-Matic is the fountain and bagged-ice workhorse. Nugget / cubelet / Pearl is the chewable soda ice — different textures, all auger machines.

When two PDF revisions disagree, believe the latest manufacturer PDF on the brand site, not a dealer reprint.
Filters, cleaners, and warranties
Each brand sells a filter SKU (Hoshizaki H9320-51 / 4HC-H, Ice-O-Matic IFQ, Manitowoc and Scotsman OEM cartridges). Warranties on evaporators sometimes extend if you stay on the OEM filter program — that is a contract term, not a spec. See water filters and descalers.
How to choose without a brand religion
- Ice type the drink program actually wants.
- Form factor and voltage the room has.
- 90/70 production vs your sizing number.
- Clearance, drain, and a local tech who stocks that evaporator.
Prices are omitted here. Street prices move weekly. If a model page shows a range, it is labeled as a dated public-listing range, not a quote.
