Best commercial nugget ice machine
There is no single best commercial nugget machine. There is a best fit for a pound target, a scoop bin or a sealed hopper, and a 115 V spot. Nugget, pearl, cubelet, H² nugget, and Chewblet are brand names for the same job: an auger that extrudes soft, chewable ice. They are not one pellet size, and a quote’s suffix changes the pounds.
This page is a shortlist from public manufacturer pages and spec sheets opened 2026-10-19. It is not a review score, not a tasting, and not a dealer quote. Confirm the circuit, the drain, and the facility’s ice-handling rules with the people who inspect the building.
Shape background is cube vs half-dice vs nugget vs flake. Pounds start on how to size. Hopper vs open bin is ice dispenser vs ice bin.
What people are buying
| Name on the sheet | Maker | How the sheet describes it | Machines below |
|---|---|---|---|
| H² nugget | Scotsman | Chewable nugget, 3/4″ × 5/16″ × 3/8″ on the 06/25 HID525 sheet | HID525 dispenser |
| Nugget | Manitowoc | Pieces 3/8″ to 1/2″ on average; 85% ice / 15% water; “soft, chewable” | RNP0320A modular head |
| Pearl Ice | Ice-O-Matic | Soft, chewable nugget-style; 1/2 × 3/8 in. on the GEM0450A90 cutsheet | GEM0450A90 head. Directory page GEM0450A cites the older sheet |
| Mini cubelet | Hoshizaki | “Mini cubelet” / “cubelet nugget-style.” The C-80 and DCM sheets print an approximate-size drawing, not one rectangle we will quote | C-80BAK, F-330BAK-C, DCM-271BAK |
| Chewblet | Follett | “Soft, chewable, compressed nugget ice” on form 1074 | 25FB414 freestanding dispenser. No directory page |
A cuber freezes water on a plate or in a cell, then harvests a rock. An auger machine freezes a thin skin and screws it out. Nugget and cubelet are that ice compressed into a pellet. Flake is the auger ice without that pellet. Hoshizaki F-330BAK on the same 08/28/25 PDF is the flake SKU (331 lb @ 70/50, 275 lb @ 90/70). The drink machine in that cabinet is the cubelet sibling F-330BAK-C. Do not put flake in a milk-tea cup because the cabinet matches.
People want the pellet because it packs a fountain cup, a smoothie jar, or a shaker, and it dispenses through a chute. It is the wrong rock for a spirit-forward cocktail. That split stays on best ice for a cocktail bar.
Size the venue, then the leftover
Manufacturer “up to” pounds are 70°F air / 50°F water unless the sheet prints a 90°F / 70°F cell. A hot kitchen uses the 90/70 cell when you have it. The factors below are the published rules of thumb already on the sizing page and the venue guides. They are not a new VenueIce formula.
| Buyer | Where the pounds are worked | What usually fits this ice | What fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cafe, iced coffee | Cafe undercounter and sizing: Atlantic 0.35–0.6 lb per iced drink | Cubelet undercounter when the bin covers the rush. Half-dice and crescent are the other cafe shapes | A 27 lb leftover for a Saturday that pulls 40 lb between 11:00 and 13:00 |
| Smoothie / juice blender | Smoothie bar: Kitchen Spot 2.5 lb/person is not the same worksheet as 0.5–1 lb per drink | Modular nugget head + bin once the ounce line is a few hundred pounds | A 25 lb hopper as the blender dump bin |
| Boba / bubble tea | Boba shop: cup ounces, not the smoothie 2.5 lb line | Cubelet or small cube in the cup; modular nugget when the evening pull exceeds an undercounter bin | Copying a 24 oz blender dump onto every milk tea |
| Bar, chewable highball or blender | Bar for pounds; cocktail ice for the rock | A second machine for the chewable ticket | Nugget in the spirit well |
| Hospital patient floor | Hospital: published 10 lb/bed is the building line, not one hopper | Sealed ice-and-water dispenser on the floor. Kitchen ice is a separate plant | Treating 10 lb × beds as the 10–25 lb hopper capacity |
| Nursing home | Nursing home: published 6 lb/bed, not the hospital 10 | Same dispenser-vs-kitchen split | One corridor hopper for the dining room |
| Office break room | Office: one published figure is ~1.5 lb per employee; many offices are lower | 15″ cubelet cabinet or a small dispenser | A modular head for 25 people |
A 24-hour rating is not a bucket. Work the rush on ice bin sizing. A dispenser hopper of 10 lb or 25 lb has to keep making ice during the window. It will not hold the lunch pull the way a 300 lb bin will.
Dispenser or a head on a bin
| You need | Buy | Storage on the sheets below |
|---|---|---|
| Staff scoop into cups, blenders, or shakers | Undercounter with its own bin, or a modular head plus a bin | C-80 27 lb. F-330 family 80 lb. RNP and GEM are heads — storage is the bin you add |
| Guests, patients, or staff at a chute, hands out of the ice | Self-contained ice-and-water dispenser | DCM-271BAK 10 lb. HID525 25 lb. Follett 25 series 25 lb (50 series on the same sheet is 50 lb) |
You do not turn a dispenser into a dump bin with a setting. Full form-factor notes: ice dispenser vs ice bin and undercounter vs modular vs countertop.
Air-cooled or water-cooled
Most cafes, bars, trucks, and offices should start air-cooled. Water-cooled machines add condenser water on top of the 12 gal per 100 lb potable figure these sheets share. Many cities restrict once-through cooling water. Background: air-cooled vs water-cooled.
Confirmed water-cooled rows, same families:
- Scotsman HID525W(B)X-1 on the 06/25 sheet: 500 lb @ 70/50, 400 lb @ 90/70, 25 lb, 115/60/1, 15 A max fuse, min. circuit listed as Cord, 3.53 kWh/100 lb, potable 12 gal/100 lb, condenser water 120 gal/100 lb. Cabinet 21.25″ × 24.38″ × 35″. The product-page summary is the air-cooled model (380 lb @ 90/70, 4.18 kWh/100 lb) and says so.
- Follett 25/50 FB water-cooled on form 1074 (05/02/2025): 380 lb @ 70/50, 330 lb @ 90/70. Condenser water on that sheet is a flow, 0.5 gpm at 70°F water, not a gal/100 lb cell. Same cabinet family as the air-cooled row.
- Ice-O-Matic GEM0450W90 is on the manufacturer site as Pearl, water, 21″, 115/60/1, production band 400–500 lb. That HTML page does not print a 70/50 or 90/70 cell. Those pounds are unconfirmed here. Do not copy the older GEM0450W sheet (508 / 429 lb, R404A) onto an A90 quote.
- Manitowoc RNP0320A sheet 4988F (07/22) is the air-cooled model. It does not print a water-cooled production row. A drawing callout mentions a condenser inlet “water-cooled only.” That is not a second set of pounds.
Comparison from the sheets
Pounds are per 24 hours. 70/50 is 70°F air / 50°F water. 90/70 is 90°F air / 70°F water. Directory links are our model pages. Follett, DCM-271BAK, F-330BAK-C, and the current GEM0450A90 suffix do not have their own directory pages.

| Ice-O-Matic GEM0450A90 | Pearl | Modular head | Air | 415 lb on the Rev 10/2025 reprint | 304 lb on that reprint | None. Bin is separate | Table 21 × 24 × 27 in. Drawing on the same PDF also prints 21.20, 24.47, and 27.02 | 115/60/1, 10.7 A min. circuit, 15 A max breaker. A plug is not printed |
| Scotsman HID525 air (AX / ABX) | H² nugget | Ice-and-water dispenser | Air | 500 lb | 380 lb | 25 lb hopper | 21.25″ × 24.38″ × 35″. Wall-mount AW is 23.25″ wide and has no drip tray | 115/60/1, 15 A max fuse, min. circuit Cord, 7.5 ft NEMA 5-15P. A running-amp number is not on the sheet |
| Follett 25FB414A | Chewblet | Freestanding ice-and-water dispenser | Air | 425 lb | 340 lb | 25 lb | Height 62.88″. Width 21.00″ top / 22.75″ bottom. Depth 23.75″ top / 24.75″ bottom | 115 V/60/1. Spec sheet 7.2 A, 8.1 ft NEMA 5-15 90° hospital-grade cord. The install manual prints other amp and cord figures — see below |
Figures that are not one number
- C-80BAK 90/70. The HTML product page says “approximately 92 lb” and does not print 65. The color spec dated 03/11/26 (item 13229K) prints 92 lb @ 70/50 and 65 lb @ 90/70 for C-80BAK and the ADA variant. The table uses the PDF. The directory page’s 90/70 cell is still blank because it followed the HTML line.
- GEM0450A vs GEM0450A90. GEM0450A cites the older sheet (Rev 04/16, part 7000): air-cooled 464 lb @ 70/50, 354 lb @ 90/70, 115/60/1, 16.0 A min. circuit, 20 A fuse, 21 × 24 × 27 in., R404A, 5.31 kWh/100 lb. The current Ice-O-Matic page is GEM0450A90: Pearl, air, 21 × 24 × 27, 115/60/1, R290, ENERGY STAR on that HTML, production band 400–500 lb only. The 415 / 304 cells, 10.7 A, and 15 A breaker are the Rev 10/2025 cutsheet reprint (Ice-O-Matic’s Denver address and the same feature list), not a line the HTML page prints. Match the suffix on the quote. Do not average 464 and 415.
- GEM0450A90 plug. The reprint says 3 wires including ground and shows an electrical connection. It does not name a NEMA plug. Treat the plug as unconfirmed.
- RNP0320A head size. Use the labeled D-420 stack (22″ × 34″ × 76″, bin 310 lb). Head-only height and depth are unconfirmed as a single W×D×H. The amp cell is the 115/60/1 standard. The sheet says 230/50/1 is also available and does not print that version’s amps here.
- HID525 running amps. Max fuse 15 A and minimum circuit Cord are what both the product page and the 06/25 PDF print. There is no separate load-amp number. Wall-mount width is the 23.25″ figure above, not 21.25″.
- Follett amps and cord. Form 1074 dated 20250502 prints 7.2 A and an 8.1 ft cord. The R290 installation manual for 25FB414A/W and 50FB414A/W prints 11.0 A and 15 A max fuse in the electrical block, 20 A max fuse on a later model line, and a 7-foot cord. Production, storage, and cabinet dimensions match across the 2025 spec reprints. The amp, the max fuse, and the cord length do not. Size the breaker from the data plate and the PDF that matches it.
Other sheet facts used above, not repeated in the grid: C-80 heat rejection 1,400 BTU/h, 8.5 kWh/100 lb and 12 gal/100 lb at 90/70, R290 1.9 oz, front-in / front-out, UL outdoor on the product page. F-330BAK-C 5.0 kWh/100 lb, 12 gal, 3,400 BTU/h, R290 2.8 oz. DCM-271BAK 5.3 kWh/100 lb, 12 gal, 3,500 BTU/h, R290 5.3 oz, push-button ice or water. The sensor suffix DCM-271BAK-OS is a different item already on the dispenser guide; do not copy this row’s 3,500 BTU onto it. RNP0320A 6.88 kWh/100 lb, 12 gal, 7,511 BTU/h average, R290, ENERGY STAR 3.0, nominal 3/4 HP compressor. GEM0450A90 reprint: 2.45 kWh/100 lb at 70/50, 3.7 kWh/100 lb at 90/70, potable 12 gal, condenser water N/A, about 4,070 BTU/h, R290 charge 120 g. HID525 air: 4.18 kWh/100 lb, 12.0 gal/100 lb, 6,800 BTU/h, R290 5.0 oz. Follett air-cooled energy cell at 90/70 is 6.0 kWh/100 lb (the 70/50 energy cell is N/A), potable 12.0 gal/100 lb, heat rejection 5,000 BTU/h, R290 3.49 oz.
Clearances printed on those sheets: HID525 6″ left, back, and right. RNP top/sides 8″, back 5″. C-80 front-in / front-out with 15″ in front for service and room at the rear for water and drain. F-330 and DCM: 24″ above to pull the auger. DCM also 6″ at the rear and sides, and the sheet says it is not for outdoor sun. Follett air-cooled ventilation 3″ right, left, and rear and 4″ on top. A sealed millwork hole is a derate. Use 90/70 if that is the room.
A practical pick
- 15″ cafe or office hole, chewable ice, modest Saturday: C-80BAK. 65 lb @ 90/70 and a 27 lb bin are the constraints, not the 92 lb headline. Same cabinet family the cafe shortlist already uses.
- Undercounter scoop bin around 250–300 lb, still 115 V cord-and-plug: F-330BAK-C (250 lb @ 90/70, 80 lb bin). The flake twin in that cabinet is F-330BAK, not this ice.
- Countertop ice-and-water, office or clinic, 10 lb hopper is enough because the machine keeps running: DCM-271BAK (211 lb @ 90/70 into 10 lb).
- Higher make in a dispenser, 25 lb hopper: air-cooled HID525 (380 lb @ 90/70) or Follett 25FB414A (340 lb @ 90/70). The hopper is still 25 lb. A hospital 10 lb/bed total does not fit in it. See hospital and nursing home.
- Smoothie or boba shop that scoops through an afternoon: modular head. RNP0320A 236 lb @ 90/70, or GEM0450A90 304 lb @ 90/70 on the reprint above. Order a bin the head’s chart names. The GEM product page lists B40, B42, B55, and B110 with adapter kits; the reprint’s 22″ B42 cell is 351 lb. That is storage, not extra production.
- Water-cooled only when the room cannot take the air-cooled heat and the building still allows once-through condenser water. Use the water rows in the previous section, not a guess.
Household countertop “nugget” machines are a different product. Do not treat one as NSF commercial equipment unless that listing says it is.
What the auger changes about upkeep
Nugget and flake machines have a gearbox, an auger, and bearings. The sheets advertise those parts as low-maintenance. That is their wording, not a claim that the gearbox never fails.
- Scotsman 06/25 HID525 sheet: “Sealed, maintenance-free bearings.”
- Manitowoc RNP0320 sheet: “High load maintenance free bearings.”
- GEM0450A90 cutsheet: “Maintenance-free, industrial-grade double roller bearings” and a load monitor that “checks workload on gearbox, shutting down system before a problem develops.”
- F-330BAK(-C) spec: “Stainless steel auger with greaseless bearing,” plus 24″ of top clearance to remove the auger.
A dead gearbox is a parts job. The repair vs replace page already treats a rusty F-330 or HID with a bad gear box as often a replacement, not another acid cycle.
Cleaning is two chemicals, in the order the manual prints. Cleaner / descaler takes mineral scale. Sanitizer takes slime and algae. The intervals already collected on how to clean are not one VenueIce number: Scotsman HID planned maintenance says typically twice a year, minimum 6 months; Hoshizaki’s cited flaker and DCM instructions say at least twice a year. F-330 and DCM also advertise CleanCycle24, a 2-second flush every hour. That flush is not the twice-a-year clean and sanitize. Ounces stay in the manual for that data plate.
A filter is not a sanitizer and not a descaler. Filters and descalers: the C-80 spec lists H9320-51; GEM0450A90 lists manifold IFQ1. The HID525 sheet says to use a Scotsman filter and does not name the cartridge on that page. The F-330BAK(-C) PDF says to see the water-filter spec and does not name a cartridge in the text. Hoshizaki’s 4HC-H page says that filter is not recommended for flakers — that exclusion is for the flake SKU, and it is not a license to hang a random cartridge on the cubelet.
Price, without a new price list
Check the retailer listing for the suffix on the quote. Manufacturer pages used here do not print an MSRP. A head-only GEM or RNP is not the same purchase as a dispenser that includes the hopper, and neither price includes the drain, the circuit, or a filter.
The cost guide already records one dated HID525 shelf listing (read 2026-10-12). This page does not add new dollars for C-80, F-330BAK-C, DCM-271BAK, RNP0320A, GEM0450A90, or Follett. Those carts move. Open them.
What this page is not
- Not a ranked “best of” and not a test. No scores, no quotes from owners, no “we ran this auger.”
- Not every nugget head those brands sell. Larger GEM and Follett 50-series storage (50 lb, height 66.88″, same 425/340 lb air-cooled production on form 1074) are named only where the sheet we opened prints them.
- Not a health-code letter. NSF/ANSI 12 is printed on the RNP sheet. Follett’s short-form spec says the dispenser is NSF and UL listed. That is a listing mark, not a pass for a particular install.
- Not the venue worksheets. Use the links in the sizing table once you have a cup count.
